Ecophysiology and biogeochemistry

Description of the research area

Responsible for the research area is professor Leif Klemedtsson

Our research focuses on ecosystem processes and their responses to environmental conditions and change. We study ecophysiology and biogeochemistry in ecosystems ranging from the tropical forest to the arctic tundra and ocean. Particular emphasis is put on ecosystem processes and plant-soil-atmosphere interactions in a global environmental change context, including changes in climate, pollution and land-use.

The overall approach of the EoB group is the combination of empirical studies and modelling, covering spatial and temporal dynamics. Our empirical studies lead to hypothesis testing and knowledge synthesis by models thereby integrating the work of different researchers. The model work is used to formulate new research questions and hypotheses and support decision making with respect to greenhouse gas emission and air pollution effects.

We have many collaborations, both nationally (e.g. BECC, LAGGE) and internationally (e.g. ICOS, ITEX, NitroEurope, and several COST actions). Our research includes process-oriented studies, ecosystem approaches/surveys, manipulative studies (e.g. temperature, CO2, ozone) as well as ecosystem modelling.
