Ecology and Conservation

Description of the research area

Responsible for the research area is professor Bengt Gunnarsson and Ulf Molau

The two main foci of this research area are (1) arctic and alpine plant ecology and (2) conservation issues in managed ecosystems, including suburban landscapes and oak-dominated temperate forest. Zoologists and botanists collaborate on important topics such as biodiversity, climate change, human influence and landscape ecology. The alpine ecology group highlights mountain biodiversity and climate impacts on tundra ecosystems, and was instrumental in the establishment of the still active network International Tundra Experiment (ITEX) in the early 1990s. Data on biodiversity are made available at the Global Mountain Biodiversity portal. The conservation group has mainly addressed questions on human impact on forest biodiversity and food web dynamics. Our research group feeds into policy-making thanks to active participation in UN conventions and mechanisms, such as CBD, UNFCCC, IPCC, and REDD .
