My research interest is on the quantification and modeling of ecosystem C- and N- fluxes. I focus on the process-based modeling of ectomycorrhizal systems and their integration into ecosystem models. Ectomycorrhiza have a major impact on C- and N- flows in ecosystems but are so far considered only implicitly in most of the existing biogeochemical models. By that the dynamic influence of mycorrhiza on soil-plant-water processes is neglected. By the development of the MYCOFON model which is a dynamic feedback model capturing the exchange processes between mycorrhizal roots and fungi and by the integration of MYCOFON into the COUP model I try to fill this gap in ecosystem modeling.
My second research focus lies on the quantification and modeling of trace gas and CO2 exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. I take field measurements of N2O and CO2 fluxes on agricultural and forest sites and work on the improvement of gas flux simulation in biogeochemical models.
